Dampness
Rubber products should not be stored in damp storage rooms. Care
should be taken to see that no condensation occurs. The relative
humidity should desirably be below 65%.
Lighting
Rubber products should be shielded from light, especially from direct
sunlight and strong artificial light with a high ultra-violet content.
For this reason, the windows of storage rooms should be covered
with a red or orange (never blue) coat of protective lacquer. All
light sources that emit ultra-violet light, such as the commonly
fitted fluorescent tubes, are especially damaging because of the
formation of ozone associated with them. Room lighting with normal
incandescent bulbs is preferable.
Oxygen and Ozone
Rubber products should be protected against air changes, especially
against draughts, by wrapping, storing in airtight containers or
by other means. This applies particularly to articles with a large
surface to volume ratio, e.g. rubberised fabric or cellular articles.
Since ozone is especially damaging, the storeroom must not contain
any kind of equipment that generates ozone, e.g. fluorescent light
sources.
